GIMP Handbook - How to clear the background color

In this post we describe how we can make the background color transparent in an image with GIMP.

Here is the initial image:

Step 1: Make sure the image has an alpha channel. If there is no alpha channel, we can add it by

  1. Go to Layer
  2. Select Transparency
  3. Select Add Alpha Channel

Step 2: Use By Color Selection Tool

  1. Go to Tools
  2. Select Select Tools
  3. Select By Color Select

We can check the selected area by using the QuickMask button.

Step 3: Clear the background.

  1. Go to Edit
  2. Select Clear
